Just off the coast of Stone Town sits one of Zanzibar's most distinctive attractions, an island with a complicated history and a population of giant tortoises that have become one of the most photographed residents of the archipelago. The History of Prison Island Despite its name, Changuu Island, commonly called Prison Island, was never used as an active prison. It was originally intended to hold rebellious slaves and later quarantined yellow fever patients before becoming the protected nature reserve it is today. The Giant Tortoises The island is home to Aldabra giant tortoises, some over 100 years old, originally gifted from Aldabra Atoll in the Seychelles. Visitors can walk among the tortoises and feed them, a genuinely memorable wildlife encounter for an island better known for its beaches. Snorkelling Around the Island The waters surrounding Prison Island offer good snorkelling conditions, with coral reef visible just offshore, making this a natural half-day combination of wildlife and water activity. Getting There Prison Island is a short boat ride from Stone Town, typically taking 20 to 30 minutes, and is most commonly visited as a half-day trip combined with the Stone Town tour.
